An English equal-arm balance with a turned brass column supporting a blackened steel beam on precision knife-edge pivots. The original pair of circular brass pans is suspended by brass chains on a polished mahogany base. Such balances were employed by apothecaries, chemists, merchants, assay offices and scientific laboratories where precise measurement was required.

De Grave traces to the seventeenth century, trading as De Grave, Short & Co. (1845–1871) before joining the Avery organisation — a maker well regarded by collectors today.
